WASDEF Grants $8,227 to 2 OM Teams Headed to World Finals

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (MAY 21, 2019) — The Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation (WASDEF) granted $8,227 to the district’s Odyssey of the Mind teams headed to the World Finals this week at Michigan State University. 

The Education Foundation was able to contribute a combination of gifts received from those in the community, area businesses and WASDEF’s unrestricted fund.

Of the eight contending teams from the district that competed at the state competition in April, teams representing Cochran Primary and Williamsport Area Middle schools advanced to the World Finals. Listed below are those MSU-bound teams and problem category:

  • Cochran Primary School: “Opposites Distract,” coached by Melanie Vail and April Frank. Team members: Emily FrankCooper GutberletBrayden HarpsterChaedyn LockardJulisa MartinRoslyn Perry, and Alex Vail.
     
  • Williamsport Area Middle School: “Leonardo’s Workshop,” coached by Beth Lewis, Liz Manetta and assisted by Matthew Gutberlet. Team members: Olivia CiabattariMia ClarkSydney KelleyLisa LewisBen Manetta and Lizzie Ryder.

This will be the fifth consecutive year WASD teams have competed at the World Finals. 

Last year, two teams from Curtin and WAMS were successful in the program’s regional, state and world competitions. Those teams competed at Iowa State University, both ranking in the top 25.

Odyssey of the Mind is a competition that blends creativity, engineering and teamwork. It is 100 percent student-directed, with adult coaches acting as guides. For more information, or to review synopses of this year’s program problems, visit www.odysseyofthemind.com.
